A portrait of the man behind the show—part love letter, part diagnosis of why the laughs don’t hit like they used to.

Who Is It For?

If you love SNL but argue about its ‘eras’ like it’s sports, this doc is basically catnip—how the institution was built, how it survived, and why it now feels different. It’s also for documentary fans who like character studies of powerful gatekeepers and the systems they created.

Vibe Match

Won't You Be My Neighbor? meets a backstage SNL autopsy: affectionate history with a sharp ‘what happened to the machine?’ edge.

What People Are Saying

They need to move away from what they’ve done in the past decade. In the past, the political satire has been sharper and more creative. Lately it feels like everything has just been a recreation of any event that happened within the past week turned up to eleven.

I really, really just hope they tone down the political sketches. It's fine when it's an election year, but jesus fuck I never want to see a Trump sketch again. I've had enough of it.

The political sketches are honestly so frequent and bad. If Twitter likes you then you are probably doing some things wrong.

40 years ago SNL (and Carson) was practically the only avenue for up and coming comedians to get exposure to a national audience. Nowadays, comedians can be more succesful and get more exposure, as well as more revenue, working with online platforms. SNL has been harvesting talent from these producers (Good Neighbor for example) for years now with moderate success but has totally failed in establishing major crossover talents like Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers, or Tina Fey. It's not just SNL that is growing increasingly irrelevant, it's the entire medium.
